Wildern head teacher of the year dies
 |
| Jeffrey Threlfall |
A HAMPSHIRE head teacher who saw pupil numbers grow, exam results improve and was last year declared the best in the country died yesterday.
Jeffrey Threlfall, who was in charge of Wildern School in Hedge End for eleven years, had been undergoing intensive cancer treatment.
He was awarded the UK Royal Air Force Teaching Award for Headteacher of the Year in a Secondary School last October.
During his time at Wildern School he saw pupil numbers and academic achievement double with 84 per cent of pupils gaining five or more GCSES graded A* to C last summer.
The 1,760-pupil school was described as outstanding during its last Ofsted inspection.

Very sad, but what a fantastic legacy from a man that cared deeply about children. He will never be forgotten.

What a massive loss to Wildern and teaching in general. To turn the school around as he did he's left a lasting legacy for the area. RIP.

Jeff was a inspirational leader with a passion, vision and commitment to Wildern that made a truly great school. His legacy will undoubtedly be that he created a culture that will live on in the school and continue to enrich the lives of thousands of young people into the future.

As a former member of Wildern School, it is clear that Mr Threlfall was the best Head Teacher that wildern could have asked for and he has changed the school immensely to what it is today. I am sure that he will sorely be missed by many people. He was a amazing and caring man. RIP

So incredibly sad, to lose a man who has contributed so much to this community and especially the school.
Pupils past (including me) and present should remember him for exactly what he was, a passionate, caring and brilliant headteacher.

I go to Wildern. It was a huge shame, he was a brilliant head teacher and everything and he really helped to turn the school around. I'm really glad he achieved what he wanted in his life, like winning the Headteacher Award.

Having taught at Wildern School for nearly 15 years, it has been amazing to recall just how much the school has achieved and improved in that time. Jeff was the catalyst for this improvement. His ability to attract external funding still amazes me to this day - and the pupils of Wildern School now enjoy many outstanding facilities as a result of his efforts. I think all of the staff will agree that their performance and skills have improved thanks to the leadership and vision that Jeff brought us - he simply put in place policies and ideas that allowed us, and hence the pupils, to achieve more.
It is a great shame that Jeff did not make it to his retirement but I was pleased to hear that he was able to receive his honour from the Queen on Wednesday. Thanks Jeff, I hope you are at peace.

He was a visionary, a headteacher who was working probably 3-5 years a head. This sometimes made him difficult to work with but also made him an inspiration and a real motivator. He work hard to raise standards and was incredibly child focused. He will be missed in the teaching profession, the educational leadership and especially the school. I personally learnt so much and will be grateful for the time I worked for him.

I left Wildern School this summer, and I would like to say that there is no way that I would have achieved what I did with my GCSE's if it hadn't been for Mr Threlful. He made the school a great environment and an amazing place to learn. He provided us with top class facilities and I don't think that any of us former puils (and present pupils) can thank him enough. I hope he is at peace now.

I remember the late 1980's when Wildern school was notorious- poor results, poor behaviour, poor reputation-this resulted in many of us who lived locally going to other schools in the area and not Wildern- to see the transformation that this man spearheaded is truly remarkeable and I am sad to read of his death- I pray God will bless his friends and family at this time- and my thoughts go with his colleagues and the pupils at the school- RIP Mr Threlfall

He was a great man, so nice and caring. He will be sadly missed by all. God bless him and his family.

i am in shock. i left in 1999 and we were not happy when mr threlfal took over. he changed some many thing that mr rocket had done. however i now realise that is because he wanted the best for us. i wasn't an amazing student and was borderline on all core subjects so he looked at ways to help get me on the right side. a mentor was arranged for me to help me see where i was going wrong. if it wasn't for the samll things like that i would not have got the results i did an i know this is the same for others.
my thoughts go out to his family. be very proud of him, he is a real credit the school.

What a School Head and never to be forgotton - forget Ted Bates statue and put one of Jeff outside Wildern
This man brought my son from special needs level at age 11 to a confident pupil gaining 10 A-C grades leading to 3 A levels and a 1st class honours in Music, as well as a daughter with many happy memories and friends from her time at Wildern.
A lovely man with a big heart - he wouldn't give up - his reason being "I love my school" that says it all doesn't it ?? R.I.P.

That is awful news- he came in when I was in Year 9 and we immediately saw the exam results and atmosphere in the school shoot up. From my parents not wanting me to go to Wildern due to its poor reputation to leaving as head girl, I was proud of the school and its staff- and particularly Mr Threlfall. He was instrumental in sponsoring my volunteering in South Africa, and was so proud of the school when he showed me round when I came back. It has improved so much and he will be an enormous loss.

Wildern's staff and students were devastated when we heard the sad news of Mr Threlfall's death. He put every effort into ensuring that all pupils have the support they need to improve and excel. Jeff has left his fine legacy in the capable hands of his Senior Management Team, who are doing their very best to ensure the well being of staff and pupils at this difficult time.
My deepest condolences to his family.

I was shocked and saddened to read about this yesterday. I was a pupil at Wildern from 1998-2003 and, although I never got the chance to speak to him much, he did a great job turning the school around. The new reward systems and buildings made a big difference. His loss will be felt keenly.
RIP Sir.

As Head Girl at Wildern School in 2000/01 I was lucky enough to work quite closely with Mr Threlfall and saw the school change year on year because of his hard work and dedication. The school made a huge impact on me and now that I am planning to have children of my own I have moved back into a house that is in the catchment area of Wildern so that I can be sure my own children have the same fantastic opportunity I did there. I can honestly say that school made me who I am and it was all down to the most respected and inspirational head teacher in Hampshire. He will be sorely missed.

Wildern could never have asked for a more motivational, caring or dedicated Headteahcer. Mr Threlfall was simply fantastic and he has done more for the school than words can say. He really has changed the lives of thousands of children, and I think the brilliant achievements they go on to have are testimony to that. Everyone there owes him a part of their success and that's a legacy that won't die.
Many condolences to his family and friends and, of course, to him: an immeasurable thanks. God bless him.

Mr Threlfall was by far the best head teacher that any school could wish for. Throughout his time at Wildern all he cared about was giving all his students the best opportunities in life and he devoted his entire life to doing so. Heres to the man who gave people a fighting chance at life and someone who will never be forgotten by friends and family and everyone who knew him.
Rest In Peace sir and God bless you...

What a sad lost to wildern school and the hedge end community. Mr Threlfall made Wildren a fantastic school and completely turned around its reputation, a brilliant head teacher! I left in 2003, went to university and discovered that many people never got the opportunities that we were given in this school, so I am extremely proud to say i went to Wildern.

Mr Threlfall was one amazing man. I left Wildern this year and had the privelage of him being around, he gave us so many the oppurtunities the facilities he had constructed such as the dart and english/it/science block,he certainly made Wildern an "outstanding" school.
wildern wudnt hav been the same if he didnt take over, i cant believe he's died...it just happens to the nicest of people :( the next person has some very big shoes to fill....its pratically irreplaceable... :( its so sad i just coudlnt believe it...i always remember in assembly he was just so proud (always calling us "youngster") that he has the opportunity to turn the school around and he did such a good job. i respect him so much....
well he will be missed im sure because he did so much and was amazing!

As a former pupil of Wildern who left in 2002, I was extremely saddened and shocked to hear of Mr Threlfall's passing. He was a true inspiration and single handedly transformed Wildern school into one of the countries best, evenly reflected in the honours he received throughout his career. The school has lost a great role model and in my opinion an irreplaceable head master. Rest In Peace.

As both a former student and former employee of the great man himself...I am shocked by his death. I remember the first day he started at wildern, his presence was powerful, and the respect he gained in such a short period of time was unspeakable. This man brought discipline to the school, he bought a culture of complete learning, he gave oppotunities to us all that we were very very privaliged to receive.
Sir, you were an inspiration to many of us, part of you live amongst us all...rest easy x

This is extremely sad news. One of the best head teachers I have ever seen. He did so much for the school, pupils and local community. A true inspirational leader. I still remember when I first met him. Although somewhat stern, you could tell that he had so much care for the school and his pupils. He helped us all accomplish so much and has made a difference to many of our lives. Condolences to all close to him.
Thank-you for all you did for us pupils.
You will be sorely missed Sir.

But what i can say, is that i wouldnt be here, in Reading today if it wasnt for what you did.
So, here's to you sir, your legacy will live on forever in the lives of those who learned under you. We will never forget what you did, and i will always remember, and i will always try, these uni years are for you sir, just so you know it was all worthwhile.

The school has suffered a great loss, Mr Threlfall was a great man and fully deserved every award he was presented with.

Since I was Head Girl at Wildern for 2005/06 both Glenn the Head Boy and I worked quite closely with Mr Threlfall, especially when it came to making sure the school menu was complying to the new food laws that the Government had put in place. He was passionate about this and every other issue that he came across and trusted the pupils completely to make the correct decisions for their future. I was so sad when I heard the news because we all thought the cancer would stay in remission.
Our lasting memory of Mr Threlfall will be of a great guy who wanted the best for every person that came to our school and his achievements were extraordinary, in particular the Ofsted report for 2005/06 where we got "Outstanding" in every band.
Now future pupils of Wildern will never be able to go "Dunna dunna dunna dunna BATMAN!" ever again. LOL

How can we ever thank this man for what he did for us....he made many of us what we are today, he gave us the courage, he gave us the oppotunities, and he installed in us what we needed to succeed in life. he always believed in us. Did we ever understand in our school years how much of his life he dedicated to making OUR school he best school in the country, what an achievement..how proud oare you all that OUR school was the school that was talked about, not just across the South, but across the UK. Im proud of that, and the man we are all grieving for today, and for time to come, made that school. Im proud to say he was my headteacher. A character, one hell of man...I hope that each of us carry a little piece of him, so that his legacy lives on, and our children will have the same opportinies as us. Sir, to you I owe so much, if only we had crossed paths so that I could tell you just how so. Thank you for your belief in us. We were just kids, but to you so so much more. You truly believed that we had one shot at making our lives, and you ensured we had everything to ensure it was gonna be a god one. [bold]Good night Sir.[/bold] xx

Good night Sir. xx

Sir,
Over the past few nights I have come on his page to see what everyone else has written trying to find the words which would sum up how you helped me in my life choices. I find now it is too difficult to say.
Us youngsters were very lucky to have the privilege of being at a school which u had transformed into a place for learning, a place for friendship, a place for freedom of thought, a place for inspiration and a place for hope. You gave us the hope we needed; we saw that you had hope in us for the future.
I was lucky enough to cross paths with you on many occasions and the presence you had the yearning to know how we were getting on as pupils was overpowering. You were willing to listen. The support you gave me when I was elected for the Youth Parliament was unbelievable and when you presented me not only with the school awards but the outside awards from citizen of the year to the Diana Princess of Wales award I could see in you the pride that you had built the school up so we could achieve.
You were batman sir, that how we warned everyone about your assemblies when they moved into year 7.
I feel that the amount of students past and present still addressing you as Sir shows how much respect you had from us. But you earnt that Sir well and truely.
I am now studying at Sheffield Hallam University for a Law degree and that would not have happened had it not been for the opportunities you gave me and choices you presented me with. I am doing this now for your memory in thank you for all your work, in thank you of letting me believe my dreams will be a reality in the future, and in thank you for listening to the pupils when no one else knew how.
Good Night Sir, Sleep well.
Della

I and all the other pupils at Wildern school have deeply appreciated what Mr Threlfall did for us. He was a great man who did so much for children during thier school time at Wildern. He even has the rewards to prove it. He will be greatly missed and remembered in our hearts. He was the best headteacher we could of wished for. X TESS X

i have only been at wildern for just over a year and i have already realised the change that he made since he took over. he was a very good teacher to all and he deserves imense recognition for that.

As a previous student at Wildern School i cannot express enough how much Jeff Threllfall strived to achieve the best both for the school but more importantly, for the pupils.
What he has done for us, and Wildern cannot be expressed in words, however the results, status and brilliant rapport achieved within the school speaks
